Monthly Cookie Club - April 2010

Hello cookie makers!

The April 2010 Cookie Club theme isSpring. That means that ANY cookies you make related to Spring fits the theme. Have fun creating!!!

Just to refresh your memory (and for any new members), here are the "guidelines" for the cookie club posts (based on Cake_Princess' original post from a few years ago):

*Anyone can join us any month they choose! We love to have new members! This isnt a contest, just a way to share ideas, be creative, and learn new things related to cookies!!

* The group consensus was that all pictures must be new pictures (and new cookies). Meaning if you have a previous pictures of cookies already in your album (or in the forum) even if it depicts the theme, please do not use them for your entry in the cookie club. The idea of the monthly theme is to get our creative juices/new ideas flowing.

* Please post pictures in this thread (Do not create a separate thread for your pictures).

* Please wait to post monthly theme cookies to your personal album/ cookie Gallery until after the monthly theme has expired (the end of the month). I know you are anxious for everyone to see your cookies in your album, but keeping the monthly theme creations in only the thread for the entire month helps to increase traffic to the cookie club thread, which will help to keep it going and hopefully get more people interested in taking part. When the month is over, please feel free to post as many pictures as you wish to the galleries. We do love to see pictures!!

* Feel free to use any edible medium to decorate your cookies - fondant, royal icing, butter cream etc. The only stipulation is it has to be a medium used in cookie or cake decorating (so no play-doh!). In your post, please let us know about your creation the type of cookie, the medium you used to decorate your cookies, any techniques that you used, etc.

* The purpose of choosing a monthly theme is to have a central theme for everyone participating to follow in order to allow us an opportunity to be creative, try new things, and learn from each other. Please try to follow the monthly theme. If the design choice is not obvious, please let us know why you chose the design you did (for example, if the theme was Music and you made ghost cookies then let us know the connection. Ghost = Phantom and Phantom of the opera > music).

* The theme is chosen at the beginning of each month by the first person to post a picture the previous month. That person should PM Bonniebakes with your theme choice before the month is over so that the new thread can be started on the 1st of the month (or within a day or two from the 1st).

I really want to participate in this, so everyone please send good well thoughts my way!!! I've been sick since the day before Easter -- sore throat, congestion, hacking cough, and (my husband's favorite icon_lol.gif ) no voice.

I had to cancel Easter dinner and, even more disappointing to me, I had to back out on a little girl's ballerina-themed cake for today and basketball cookies for our church's Nothing But Nets event this Saturday.

Sorry to kvetch, but it's getting a bit old -- and it better not keep me from making a spring cookie!!!!!

Oh, and thanks, Bonniebakes, for taking the helm on this!!!!

JGMB, I hope you get to feeling better SOON! That stuff hangs on like tar on a car...and the pollen that is rolling in doesn't help much either.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll have the time to do the cookies I want to do for this theme! And then I'll have to hope they turn out good enough to post! Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.

I'm having serious problems getting my photo to resize! On my old work computer, I could do this very easily. Now, every time I resize and hit download, it sends the photo to some unknown location! What should I do to fix this?

I've got an idea, so lets see if this works. The photo I'm trying to attach is a cookie version of my next applique pillow. I've never done applique, so it'll be interesting to see if I can pull this off. I want to make each of my sisters one of the pillows for Christmas. Given that our maiden name is "Bloom", the design takes on special meaning!

Okay, here is my birdbath cookie! I have been wanting to do a cake similar to this for a LOOOOONG time, but haven't had the occasion to do so. So when someone mentioned birds as a possible theme, this idea again came to mind.

Constructed of stacked butter cookies, coated with cookie icing for strength and then rubbed with a darker color of buttercream to give it a two-tone effect. The top cookie is like a "stained glass cookie" with melted Jolly Racher candy as the water. The little birds are fondant.

oh my gosh ! That birdbath cookie is the cutest thing I've seen in a long time ! I just love it ! How many cookies are stacked to get it that tall? The birds are adorable too - great job !

It is 11 cookies stacked up; I'll try to post pics to show.

It wouldn't be too tough to eat (believe me, I worked on the "mistakes"! LOL!) Just pull things apart.

But obviously, a treat for a couple or family to share rather than a one-person dessert!

For strength, I wanted everything coated in the cookie icing, which dries harder -- close to a royal icing. I just followed the heating directions on the bottle, and then squirted some between each cookie, then squirted it on the outside and went over it with a paint brush.

After that got good and dry (bottle says wait 45 minutes), I made some gray butter cream. My original intent was to completely pipe over the coated cookie, but it was just too difficult to get the piping bag into the nooks and crannies.

When I was wiping off the buttercream, I found that I really liked the 2-tone effect that the half-wiped-off buttercream gave, so I just squirted buttercream here and there and swiped it across the cookie until I was satisfied with the overall coloration. I like the way it turned out; a happy accident! icon_smile.gif

Yes, I'm sure royal will work. (I've just had variable success making it, so I prefer to use the bottled kind for small projects.)

By the way, the cookies aren't super thick; the whole thing is less than 2-1/2 inches tall (not counting the birds). The largest cookie is 3-1/2 inches across (measuring flat side to flat side) or 3-3/4 inches (measuring point to point.)

Couple more tips if you want to make your own birdbath cookie stack -- you really need two birds rather than just one, to balance the weight so that it doesn't lean to one side. (Learned that the hard way!)

Also, when you are making the stained glass cookie -- don't put the crushed candy in the opening until about 3 minutes before the cookies are done. If you leave them in the oven longer, they start to boil and get bubbly rather than having a smooth, glassy surface.

Oh! One more thing -- when you are applying the cookie icing/royal icing, attach all the cookies together and then turn the whole thing upside down to coat most of the top, and then flip it over again to do the bottom and the tip-top surface. Try to avoid getting the icing on the candy -- it will melt the cand if left in contact with it.
