Here's the cake from my competition this weekend. I placed 2nd in my division behind the first place and grand prize winners. This was my very first competition and there were about 15-20 contestants. Small competition but great for first time.

Inspired by Scarlett O'Hara's BBQ dress from Gone with the Wind. First time doing magnolias. Still need a lot of work on them, but they were ok. This was about 15 layers of rounds stacked and carved. it's all cake except for the top 3 inches which is RCT. for support i used a PVC pipe in the middle that secured to my cake base, some tea straws and cake circles (cardboard ones and a few foam board ones). I of course can see ALL my mistakes. I had a really hard time with the fondant and RCT seperating on the top and by the time i got there, I had about 3/4 inch seperation so I "band-aided" it with some green fondant.

Thanks to jawdroppingcakes for her photos to help in the carving process and collette peters tutorial on satin ice website for the ruffles tutorial.

This Definately a learning experience. Yours was one of my favorites in that division. I loved the vibrant colors. I wish I could have met more of the contestants. Are you going to do the one in June?? I talked to Dave and Jackie Smithwick after the competition and they said they thought it was going to be cupcakes and cookies but wasn't sure.

Cupcakes and cookies...... Not one of my favorite things. Doing the same thing over & over & over gets old for me. I start out with my cupcakes looking great but then I get tired of it and start to hurry and the end ones get a little sloppy. Now that I think about it maybe a competition would be good because it would make me take my time. I will be waiting for the information about the June competition.
