How do you usually color gumpaste? I am making a sunflower and for the petals I colored all the gumpaste yellow and after it dried I tried to paint one to shade and give dimension. I used a gel food coloring mixed with a little water to get the consistency I wanted but now my petal is sticky. Any suggestions?

Hi

I use powder colours and mix with a little clear alcohol like vodka. When the alcohol evaporates you'll be left with nice dry paint.

better luck next time icon_smile.gif

I usually mix gel colors with the gumpaste to get the base color I want, then brush it with the powdered petal dusts after it's dry.

If you want to use gel colors instead of powder, try mixing it with a little vodka instead of water. The alcohol evaporates really quickly, so as long as you don't saturate the gumpaste, it shouldn't be sticky.
