aine2 (here on CC) has a tutorial on painting a plaid kilt on her blog http://extra-icing.blogspot.com/search/label/HOWTO.

You may have to be a member (free) to access it. Or you can PM her through CC and inquire.

There is a website in europe that sells scottish tartan edible sheets. I purchased some, and they were wonderful. They are a little expensive but it was well worth it for me anyway. If you have a good printer, you could probably print some of your own. (even just to try to get the plaid right.)

Good luck.

I just stumbled onto this blog. I made this cake for the 2006 Oklahoma Sugarart Wedding Cake Competition. First I made a flexible mold out of old denim as it has the same weave as scottish tartan. I used the mold on gumpaste then made a stencil out of poster board then dry brushed the white and black stripes. I used a little vodka mixed with dusting powder as the brushing medium.
Thank you so much
