I just joined this site, it is awesome!!! I have been told for some time I should open a business....but that is too much for me right now..I am a single mom, have a full time job and have one more year of school left on my Master's.....but I would not mind doing something small from home or rent space....just not sure where to begin..any suggestions..
Hey! Welcome!
This website is truly addictive..
Well i would begin looking into your states laws about home businesses.. like Michigan is very strict on home cake businesses so my option is to find a kitchen to rent or start looking at storefronts. After that you will see where you can go from there.

I agree with the above post-look into the laws. It would be awesome if you could sell from home, but it varies from state to state. My big advice right now is don't let ANYTHING damper your passion. Don't let negative comments or stress from a new business or anything else get in the way and burn you out-thats the life part, not the cake. I see alot of people on here get burnt out and I'm always worried that will happen to me, but just keep happy about cake and have fun! What are you doing cake-wise right now? Are you making for friends, events, etc?
Thanks for the warm welcome.. this site is sooo addictive.. I love looking at all the great cakes and ideas. Currently I am making cakes for friends.. I made a shower cake for one of the girls at work and now several have asked for birthday cakes.. I am making one this weekend in fact. I have not charged anything yet because it is a hobby and I am having so much fun..I think the one this weekend she is going to want to pay me but I wouldn't know what to charge.. I am making a 8x8 square three layer with fondant carnations on top and around it.. it is for her mom who loves carnations. I made a cute one person cake for one of the girls at work who likes to hunt.. just a deer sitting with a hunting vest with the girls name on it.. she loved it.. I will post it ..
