Is a Red Velvet cake more or less just a chocolate cake with red color added to it? I have only had it one time and didn't like it because it tasted like chemicals (my guess would be the red color).

My son wants one for his birthday, and although I have looked up some recipies I already make a really yummy chocolate cake. Will it work? TIA

I dont know much about red velvet, but the one I tried and absolutely loved was Sara's red velvet here on CC. It is not like a chocolate cake as it only has 3 tablespoons of cocoa. The cake is made with buttermilk and butter and it comes out really good....a slight hint of cocoa. You should try it sometime. I have also baked Cakemans RV, but was not thrilled...it had too much oil and I could not taste the cocoa. As far as the color, I use americolor bright red and only use a few drops to get a nice deep red. Hope this helps icon_smile.gif
