I recently saw an Ace of Cakes episode where they made a VB print bag. They found the actual fabric bag online and enlarged a section of the print to life size. They cut out parts of the print to use as templates to hand-cut fondant to recreate the fabric - it was terrific!

I saw that one too, it was beautiful. I think that technique is the way to go for that style.
