Hi all, I'm fairly new to cake decorating and have been experimenting with different things, but am struggling with the recipies. I stumbled across some of Macsmoms recipies and was blown away, but as I'm in the UK i've been struggling adapting them as we don't seem to have cake mixes. I have been making the Scratch Yellow Cake, but i'm a bit unsure as to what to substitute or add in to it to create Macsmom's Apple Pie Cake. I've been trying to understand all of the science behind it, but am completely lost. icon_sad.gif

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What Macsmom does is start with the basic WASC recipe and modify from there.

There is a thread I have been watching that had some great ideas and help. It is looong but at the beginning of the thread there is a lot of help with modifying the recipe. The entire thread is a wealth of information and ideas.

I've been watching that thread as well, but the trouble i'm finding is that the WASC recipe uses a cake box mix, but i can't use one of those, so i'm not sure what ingredients of the Scratch Yellow Recipe to use and not to use icon_sad.gif

What are you trying to do?

Are you trying to make an apple pie cake from scratch?

Hi Mike, I'm trying to make Macsmom's Apple Pie Cake, but it uses the yellow box cake mix, and I want to use the Scratch Yellow Cake, so not sure how to alter the recipe.

Do you have a scratch yellow cake? I don't know what the recipe is. It's based on a box. You want an apple pie cake? Chunky, or not? You might have to adjust the liquid a lil to compensate for the apples, but add your spices, and apples to a scratch base.

I use Sayhellojana's recipe for the yellow cake, which is:-

2 3/4 c. all purpose flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
4 large eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
1 3/4 c. milk

and i want to make Macmom's recipe for Apple Cake Recipe, which is:-

1 yellow cake mix
1 t baking powder
3 egg whites -- whipped
20 oz can apple pie filling
1 T oil
1 t cinnamon
½ t lemon extract
¼ t nutmeg

I'd appreciate any assistance, and i apologise if it seems like such a novice question.

No reason to apologize. I'm just trying to see what you want to accopmlish that's all.

For the apple filling replace with frsh apples.
Keep the spices as is.
When using cinamon I like to use 1/2 the cinamon amount with ground cloves. Just my taste preference.

The amount of apples you put in will depend on you. For a couple of 8" rounds I would use like 3, or 4 good size apples depending on how it looks. icon_biggrin.gif

I don't think I would touch the milk though.

Thanks for the help Mike. Would i leave the 4 eggs as they are, or should i replace with 3 egg whites instead?
