I was watching an episode of Cake Boss with my BF's mom, who BTW, is also a cake decorator, and she said something like "Why does Buddy have to use all that RCT? Can't he make it all out of cake? It's a waste of RCT. I don't think RCT belongs in cakes anyway." It was the episode in which Buddy made a museum cake.

Personally, I like using RCT in cakes. It's very inexpensive and it's easy to work with and simple to make. I've had to use a few times. My BF's mom hasn't had to yet though. So I asked her "So what would you use if you had to do something that was impossible to do with cake but you didn't want to use RCT? She said "I don't know."

And that got me wondering- is there an alternative to RCT, besides an excessive amount of fondant, gumpaste, or modeling chocolate? What would you or have you used to replace RCT? (Sorry this was long.)
