So I am making my boss a baby bootie cake and I made my first batch of gum paste last night. I wrapped it in plastic wrap then put it in a air tight container and when I got it out today to work with it..it was really really hard. I used the wilton recipe. I do have the other cup of powered sugar but I just don't see how that will get it soft again. I mean this thing is hard as a rock. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Put a walnut size piece into the microwave and zap for 5 to 10 seconds. That should be enough to soften it. Knead it to check its workability. If it is soft enough you can soften a large piece next time. Length of time in the microwave will be different for each model.
I agree with dsilvest. Put it in the microwave. After that, if it gets too hard too fast, try working in some shortening.
