Can you paint royal icing with the same technique used to paint Fondant or will it melt? Is it better to color the icing first?

I have painted RI using everclear and dusts mixed together - it did not melt. I have also painted it using gel colors watered down with everclear and airbrush colors straight from the bottle.

edited to add: if you only want a single color - yes, I would color the RI instead of painting it.

yep, I've done it too. As long as the RI is totally dry, I just paint on it with paste color mixed with vodka or lemon extract.

Thank you so much guys. I'm going to try to make a little mountain bike and I didn't want to have to color just a tiny bit of RI. Will be much easier to paint it.

makes no difference if you color the RI first or not. the powders and the colors painted on like the other two told you will still work. icon_smile.gif your project sounds cute.
