How Do I Make Buttercream Smooth Looking Like Fondant?

I am a real new newbie!! I picked up the hobby of baking and decorating at the end of this past summer. I discovered I have a talent and am persuing this further. But I am still learning my baby steps and my Cake ABC's. One thing I have not yet gotten down is how to acheive that smooth fondant look with buttercream. I am practicing decorating cakes a lot and I am finding that fondant is expensive to buy and expensive to make not o mention time consuming and not having the right equipment makes it harder. Any help is appreciated! Will be posting up pics of my work soon!

Love this video! I know a lot of people on cc have started using foam rollers as well. You can probably search for a thread on that as well. Good luck!
