Lattice Work On Sides Of Cakes

When doing lattice work on the sides of cakes can you use buttercream icing? Is royal icing the better icing to use? I tried buttercream and it didn't seem to hold up, the lines kept breaking as if the icing was too heavy. What could I be doing wrong? I want to do garland with lattice work but need some advice!
