I usually just make a cake, nothing special or over the top. but this year is his 35th & I'm doing a surprise party.

Thought about mini's but don't know about time since I'm doing an entire dinner for friends & family too, but it's an option. I'm also open to a topsy turvy, fondant, even a traditional tiered etc. I actually like to do new things to change it up & give me pics.

Now comes the hard part. He doesn't play sports, he watches them every now & then but not "into" them. Same w/ hunting. He'll go on a hunting/fishing trip w/ men in the family maybe once a year, but not a die hard fan. I'd say BBQ is his favorite food but I did a grill for his dad's bday cake this year. He's not into boating or cars or anything like that. He's more of an outdoorsy kinda guy, but not die hard for anything really

We did just open a store that sells BBQ grills & accessories; wood stoves; pellet stoves, etc. Here's the unfinished website for that www.firetreebiomass.com .

Please ladies (& some men too) help me out w/ my dh's cake. Oh, invites aren't anything I can pull from, just one that says "sssshhhhh. it's a surprise". And we can't deicde if we're going to so a sit down meal or gill steaks or have BBQ. I'm going to poke & prod him tnite about that.

This is my favorite outdoorsy cake: http://cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1253545

It could be adapted to several tiers, and then something birthday-related instead of the couple and teepee on top.

I might do it on one tier but I don't know that he loves it enough to make an entire cake out of it. But I do like the side of the cake.

If I can I would like to encorporate the logo. Even make a cake similar to the logo, but don't know where to start.

I asked about food last night. He says Japanese steakhouse. Well, don't think I'll be cooking that menu & don't know what I would do cake wise for that idea b/c he's NOT a sushi guy. More FIRE, like the new business isn't everything fire! (That just hit me---but what would I do, a Fire cake?)

Still open to other suggestions icon_smile.gif

Does he like a certain band, singer or style of music?

My daughter is a beatles fan and I made this one for her 30th birthday, using FBCT: http://cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1157546

FOr my hubby, he knows NOTHING about sports at all. "Swing and a miss ---- ball one!" is his mantra! icon_lol.gif So if I made him a cake with something to do with Carrie Underwood, he not only wouldn't let us cut it, but he'd sleep with it under his pillow! icon_lol.gif

Does he have a nickname? What about a favorite color, drink, animal, book, game, music, or tv show? Is there a saying/phrase that he uses all the time and is known for? Perhaps something that goes along with one of those.

You could look through the Father's Day gallery for inspiration. There are also galleries for colors.

If you're going to do a BBQ, maybe you could make the cakes and desserts look like BBQ food, like burgers, hot dogs, steaks.

Here are some generic ideas.

It's tough when the person doesn't have any major interests. Good luck and have fun at your party!

Thanks for the suggestions. I wish he had a favorite singer/music. He likes old country (gag me!) but likes heavy metal too. No nickname, favorite color is green, drinks sweet tea by the gallon, doesn't read much, doesn't play games unless we do so at a family gathering. Watches things like Man vs Wild, Survivorman, Man vs Food, & yes I converted him to watch Million Dollar Listing icon_smile.gif. Not a chocolate lover or liker for that matter, more of a candy guy.

His favorite food is blackberries & loves his Memaw's blackberry pie. And he's a jokester. He's always making people laugh (except me I roll my eyes b/c I live w/ it). Like you said Barbaranne, it's hard when people don't have major interests!

What about your husband relaxing/sleeping on a hammock in the grass under the trees and a bar-b-que pit cooking next to him with the food on fire.

I scoured the internet this afternoon after you mentioned pyromaniac sadsmile. And I found this. I love it & I think I'll throw in a book of matches, a lighter, maybe some kindlin (sp?) & maybe a few other things if I think of them.

Would you guys make fondant/gumpaste flames, let them dry & then attach to a tiered cake? Or would you use a cake made in a bowl? Is there anything else you would suggest? Or should I just post in the How Do I? forum?

Thanks so much ladies for getting juices flowing! I'll post once I make it--but it's not until Feb 13th.

How about a carved cake of a flannel shirt and a pair of jeans, if thats his favorite clothing. Something that he like to wear to work or that he wears almost everyday. Maybe a trip you have been planning, like a Hawaiian shirt and a sweet note saying, not this year but maybe soon! Just throwing some ideas out there. If he has a tool box. maybe that? Timberland boots or his favorite sneakers? I know what your going trough cars is the only thing I got for my DH, nothing else but his work really interests him.

You ladies are funny! If it were just a few close friends (actually my family) I would say Boobs would be funny. But somehow his side of the family wouldn't laugh & my SIL would probably leave. Some can't take a joke---and she can't stand my dh b/c he's ALWAYS joking & does more so w/ her just to piss her off.

(And if he were getting Boobs for his birthday they would be in the form of an uplift & enhancement of MINE icon_smile.gif )
