How are people making the Christmas trees out of cake balls? Is there a turtorial? How do they all stick together so nicely? Is there some base in the middle that I'm not seeing?
I think that the base in the middle is a cone made from styrofoam, wrapped in wax paper, then covered in melted chocolate.. The cake balls are usually attached to the cones with toothpicks.
I saw some other instructions where the styrofoam cone was covered with press and seal, and the balls were attached using melted chocolate. I can't wait to do one of these.
Yep - I agree with others. I'm not sure if there is a tutorial available. But Threesetsoftwins could probably help you out if you need more info. She does things like this all time.
There is a whole thread on cake balls on here. Check it out for some great info.
In Cake Central Articles, there is a tutorial, posted by Jackie on how to make cake balls and then there is a very long forum thread re making the trees (assembly, etc. and many ideas re flavors for cake balls) at
http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-658476.html. It's a very large thread (last I reviewed it was over 30 segments) - takes a lot of time to read but lots of knowledge given.
Basically, after making the cake balls, a styrofoam cone is covered in waxed paper (some use plastic wrap) and balls are either adhered to cone via melted chocolate or by toothpick (some suggested dipping one end of toothpick into melted chocolate and pushing the clean end into the styrofoam ball - the cake ball itself is then inserted onto the chocolate coated toothpick).
Here's one "tree" I made with cake pops, it could be cool in Xmas colors, never thought of that before. The base is styrofoam covered in fondant. I didn't even need to take off the plastic wrapper, just spritzed it with water then applied the fondant. Skewer it first so it will attach to the base. Let dry.
I was thinking of doing something like that myself! I want to make a cone shaped one, with green colored cake balls decorated to look like they have some ornaments on them with Xmas shaped sprinkles, I also have some little sprinkles that look like stars that I can stick on the top! Man I hope I find the time to do this for a photo!
I love this idea, I will be giving this a try as soon as I find the time
I gave some basic instructions on page 5 of this thread:
