Does anyone have any advice on how to make black royal icing? I only need a small batch, but I want to make sure that it still sets. Thanks in advance!

When I need black or red RI, I use my airbrush color in place of the water in my recipe that uses dried meringue powder. HTH

When I make black, I add cocoa powder to it first to get it dark, then add in my black color. Works great and I don't have to use a ton of black.

Is putting cocoa powder in royal icing ok? Unsweetened, right?

It's always worked for me. I do use unsweetened, and I don't think it really changes the taste that much. Plus, I never use TONS of black royal icing on anything..

I'VE MADE BLACK ROYAL ICING. I USED SOME BLACK, AND SOME BROWN. IT GOT VERY CLOSE TO BLACK, AND IT DRIED EVEN DARKER. IF YOU LOOK AT MY SNOOPY CHRISTMAS CAKE, THE CHRISTMAS LIGHT CORD IS MADE THIS WAY.
