Hi Carrie
From one FCFK member to another...

Yes it needs to be refrigerated.

I just asked this SAME question on thursday and was told no it would be fine and guess what? It's Monday nite and I ate two cupcakes today and the frosting is fine. I used Indydebi's recipe for crusting buttercream and substituted 1/3 cup of shortening with 1/3 cup of cream cheese. It's delish.

Like mentioned it depends on the recipe. Personally, whether or not the recipe is to be refrigerate, I still refrigerate it just to make sure.

Try the recipe from designmeacake.com, I love Edna's cream cheese buttercream.
