This will seem really simple to most of you but I've only ever made really simple cakes before and was wondering if anyone could give me a rough guide on how to approach this cake.

I'll probably have a few attempts, I'm just not sure how to approach it as I'm a complete newbie.

Thanks for any tips.

I'm sorry, but I don't quite understand what it is you need help with.
But I'll be glad to help.

Are you going to make a 3D, 2D, or drawn picture on a flat cake?

and how many people is it for? If only 15 - 20 servings, then you can buy the 3-D cupcake pan and go from there.

I only really want to make a pretty miniature version of it. It's more for novelty than anything, it doesn't need to be big at all. I'd like to make it 3d.

Well, get the Michael's coupon that gives you 40% off and go and get the 3-D cupcake pan. When it is cooled, you can ice the top in brown and the bottom in pink, add the eyes, etc, and the swirl. Now, if you are looking to cover in fondant, that is another story...
