Baking A 3 Layer Cake

I want to start making 3 layer cakes for the extra height. I'm wondering what is the best way to bake a 3 layer cake? Do you use 2 boxed mixes and split between the 3 cakes, or would you use one box mix with an extender? What is best?

It's going to depend on what size cake you make. Instead of making a three 2" layers you could do two 3" layers. You could also keep the two 2" layers, but torte them so you have 3 layers of filling. When I'm making two 8" round layers I generally need about 1 1/2 boxes of mix (including a packet of pudding mix). I use the rest for cupcakes or something. If you're going to do 3 layers, you could probably finish off both boxes.
