and that's a polite way of putting it.

Customer: "Do you make miniature wedding cakes?"
Me: "Yes, (go into detail)"
Customer: "Great, how do we go about scheduling a tasting?"
Me- a little confused: "I'm sorry, I must have misheard you. I thought you said a miniature wedding cake. How many people were you looking to serve?"
Customer: "I was looking for a miniature wedding cake. We will only need enough for three servings, its for our anniversary."
Me: icon_eek.gificon_confused.gificon_mad.gificon_twisted.gif "Our tasting appointments are typically for bridal cakes."
Customer: Well, we can't order something without tasting it first." Click.

I totally understand tastings for wedding cakes or for a very large occasion cake, but for THREE FRICKIN PEOPLE???!!!!

Ok, let the stories begin!

Well that's a new one....a tasting for a mini 3 serving cake. How much do you suppose you would have to give them to taste....a crumb or 2? icon_razz.gificon_lol.gif

I'm laughing....but not really....as this happened to me recently this past summer. The bride came in with her WHOLE family to do the tasting. She had told me she was coming and her fella (as she put it)....well, the car drives up to my shop....out comes 6 people!!! No the "fella" couldn't make it...so she brought, Mom, Dad....2 sisters, her MIL....and her soon to be SIL...instead. They all tried the small cupcakes I had made up and she took 6 with her for her FELLA! She ordered the wedding cake....put the deposit down....called back in 2 weeks and asked if she could come do another tasting!! I was like...you already did a tasting....and she said her fella didn't get to taste any of the cake. I reminded her that I sent 6 cupcakes along with her....her exact words....OH THOSE DIDN'T MAKE IT HOME...I ATE ALL OF THEM ON THE WAY!!! I then told her....sorry, if she wanted to order some then I could work that out....but I don't do 2 tasting. I am sure there are other's out there with similar stories too...LOL!

Just had someone place their order, choose 2 flavors that they have had before (and loved), pay for said cake (which is for this Saturday) and then proceed to ask for a tasting of my 3 most popular flavors???
Keep in mind she did not want to change her flavor choices she wanted the ones she choose, she just wanted to taste 3 other flavors, for free, because I do custom cake and custom cake people do tastings right (her words)?
I really think people hear "cake tasting" and think "free cake whenever, where ever, why ever"

Wait, if it's for their anniversary, who gets the 3rd slice??

holy cow! she ate all 6 cupcakes on the way home? geez, no wonder people are getting fatter and fatter. I get sick after eating a single cupcake!

People are just stupid, it's that plain and simple. For the 3 person tasting, I'd have told them they could purchase cupcakes or something but I don't do tastings for orders less than 100 servings or whatever. Or they could pay for a tasting. Everyone wants something for free.

Ever been through Sam's on the weekend? It's like a buffet in there. It's my husband's favorite place to go!

I don't sell cakes, but just a couple of times, I considered it. Take a friend of a relative I dealt with a couple of years ago. She wanted a tasting for a birthday cake. Not the sweet 16 cake I sometimes write about, another person, another relative. I told her I'd never heard of doing a tasting for a birthday cake, and that as much as I appreciate her call, I would prefer to not do this cake.

OMG! the exact thing happened to me with a sweet 16 cake! I gave this lady 8 cupcakes for her, daughter and husband to try, she called asking for more because none of the EIGHT cupcakes made it to the husband! then she wanted to negociate the price, then...I suddently became booked! icon_wink.gif

People never cease to amaze me.

rosiecast Posted 20 Nov 2009 , 2:20am

OMG! I'm actually grateful is illegal to sell cakes in NY. LOL

lotsofsprinkles Posted 20 Nov 2009 , 2:45am

oh my... none of the cupcakes made it home? How can you not even save 1 out of the 6 or 8 cupcakes?!

My story is not really similar but i thought I'd share because it annoyed me at the time! The lady bargained hard for her cupcakes.... i gave her a price and she said she could only afford $X so i said fine, i will do them for $X and then she turns around and wants them cheaper! stating that 'because we have not tried your products before'.

I'm sorry, do you go to a cafe and say 'i have not tried your coffee before so i only want to pay $1 for it'??

grrr.

TOO funny!

just_for_fun Posted 20 Nov 2009 , 4:01am

Wow, that marriage sounds like its off to a good start. they're still engaged, and she can't manage to share one of her cupcakes with her "fella", after she just ate some cake at the tasting.... Hmmm, ya thinks she'll be back in 2 yrs with another "fella" for another wedding cake? (and do you think she then asked the gown ppl for another gown, cause she didnt fit into the first one anymore?)

Mabma80 Posted 20 Nov 2009 , 4:15am

It's called go to Walmart, close your eyes, and pick one out!

A bit off-topic, but thought I'd share a little story that is as funny as it is apalling.

I went to a cake competition a few weekends ago, and there is a tasting category. The sign said "Cake Tasting Division". We actually watched as ladies went over there and cut pieces out of the cakes and started eating them!! We quickly ran over to inform them what "Cake Tasting Division" meant. I have been to a lot of cake shows with tasting categories, but this is the first time I've seen that!!

cutthecake Posted 21 Nov 2009 , 8:18pm

OK--I've never been to a cake competition. What's a "Cake Tasting Division"? I've never heard of it, but I certainly wouldn't go at a contestant's cake with a knife (even if it was chocolate).

CakeForte Posted 21 Nov 2009 , 8:24pm

The prize is awarded based on how well you bake and execute a particular recipe.

For example, the cake tasting might be for Italian Cream. So everyone enters their recipe, and the judges sample those recipes and decide which one taste the best.

What blows me away about this is the BTB wasn't even ashamed to say she'd eaten all SIX of the cupcakes! If I couldn't keep my pie hole shut long enough to allow my "fella" to enjoy at least ONE of them, I'd be so humiliated at my own gluttony I'd make up a story like I dropped them all in a mud puddle or the dog ate them! LOL!

cutthecake Posted 21 Nov 2009 , 9:34pm

I would NEVER criticize anyone for eating SIX cupcakes, because I'm the girl who ate the ENTIRE fruitcake by herself. It did take a week or so, but I ate it all. Every cherry, nut and crumb. It was all I ate, day in and day out. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Fruitcake, fruitcake, fruitcake.
Six cupcakes? That's a snack, compared to my doorstop fruitcake!

LOL!! My husband will stand and eat the entire fruitcake in one afternoon!

I do have a little story though...I just got a call yesterday from an event planner asking if I made cake that was safe for dogs to eat - he was planning an event for 200 and needed dog cake! icon_eek.gif After a pause, I asked if he knew that dogs shouldn't eat people food - after his pause, he said that he didn't know that!

erinalicia Posted 22 Nov 2009 , 4:36pm

you can make cake that dogs can eat, they love carob, and it is perfectly safe for dogs to eat "people" food. I know people who make their own dogs food. It's the processed junk and chocolate and some other items that are dangerous for dogs. Dog food hasn't been around forever.

Eisskween Posted 22 Nov 2009 , 5:07pm

I sympathize with those who have had "tastings." Due to a couple of 'questionable' experiences, it's now free if you book your cake at the tasting and $25 to cover expenses if they don't.

Works out nice and I don't waste time or materials anymore. icon_wink.gif

11cupcakes Posted 23 Nov 2009 , 2:16pm

Tasting forcake that serves 3.Great! Well, I guess you should charge her for it.
