What's the easiest way to put a number made out of fondant as a cake topper? Thanks.

You can make the number about 1/2" thick and stick a sharpened dowel through it.

I rolled tapered snakes of colored fondant for the numbers I have done. Shaped into numbers and then inserted toothpicks into the bottom and left laying flat to dry.

i was just wondering how many days ahead you make the numbers?
do you only use gumpaste?

If it's gumpste you can do it as late as the night before , fondant and tylose need a bit longer.
Ideally I do mine on Wed. for a Saturday cake.
You can roll ropes like the others mentioned or even print out what ever you need in a font you like or that matches the cake and use that as a template.
I print it out on cardstaock, cut it out with scissors and then trace/cut it out of the gumpaste. Then stick a toothpick in it and let it dry.

I personally find better to use Pastiage for the topper. Dries faster with better results. HTH
