Will MMF dry hard & sturdy enough for wired stars and music notes? Or would the Wilton fondant do better? Should I mix it with gumpaste?

Mixing with gumpaste is best. 50/50. If you do the MMF stars about a week in advance, they will have dried hard as well, but "no fail" method would be to add the gumpaste or tylose powder if you have it on hand.

Thanks for the advice. I've done fondant decorations but never wired them before.

One thing that helps them stay on the wires is to heat the end of the wire in a flame before you put it in the fondant. That works a little better than using gum glue.

Most welcome. Here's a thread that ran a couple of days ago... you might find some good hints in it:

MMF stars on wires. I let them dry several days in advance. They worked fine, but weren't exactly rock-hard.

I rolled out the fondant a little too thin to have the wires inserted into the stars. So some of the wires got "glued" to the back of the stars with a little fondant paste (the MMF mixed with boiling water) and another wad of MMF.
