How about doing an edible image of cosmetology items: hair dryer, flat iron, rollers, makeup, etc. and place that on top. Then you can just do simple borders around the cake. That would be a colorful and easy alternative to trying to make up stuff in fondant or gumpaste. Your local bakery could probably scan your image and print you out the edible image paper for about $5 - $8 for an 8 1/2 X 11 sheet.
