Carving Cakes

How easy is to carve a cake? I needed to make a batman cake and wanted the cake to be cut in the form of a bat. Shud I do it while its almost frozen?
Any tips?

If you would like to carve the basic shape of a bat from a sheet cake, that is easy imo... I have made several cut-out cakes like that. I always use a room temp. cake, lay a paper template over the unfrosted cake, and carve around the edges... voila, a cake the shape you want w/out using a custom pan. I use a cake-icer tip to frost the outer edges b/c it requires little to no smoothing afterwards and then typically fill in the top details with a star tip. HTH!
