A client wants a dome-shaped bug cake (think beetle) with wings that are separated to look like it is flying. (Think ladybug with wings spread.) Any idea how to do this or what to make them out of being that the cake will be rounded? The cake will be covered in buttercream, btw.

I would make the wings out of foamboard and then cover them with fondant brushed with luster dust.

How would I adhere the wings to the body so they won't slide off? I have to deliver to the client and then she has to drive the cake about 30 minutes away so I need them to stay put!

Maybe a couple of dowels glued onto the underside of the foamboard with candy melts, stuck into the cake?

Some thick clear plastic, like the sheets for making quilt templates, would make neat bug wings too and wouldn't be as heavy.
