i want to practice smoothing buttercream so i thought i'd use box cake to save time and $.
could someone please recommend chocolate/yellow mixes that have a dense texture?
I haven't found any straight out of the box mixes that are dense as is, but when I doctor them up with this recipe they hold up great:

i'm a newbie hobbyist so i don't have a cake dummy and am not familiar with how similar they are to real cake in texture.
also, the crew at the office is very happy to be my guinea pigs. unfortunately, they don't offer objective criticism but rather say they love everything.
