Crumb Coat

If you are not using a crusting buttercream to ice your cake, what is the best thing to do about a crumb coat? Should a thin layer of the icing being used be applied?

I'd either use buttercream of ganache. If you are using custard or preserves as the filling then it is not best to use it as a crumbcoat or icing.
