Grass Or Moss Effect

I am new to cake decorating and would be grateful for advice on creating a grass or moss effect. I am making a cake for a little boy who wants a battle scene - he is providing me with little soldiers and I have to create a cake base with divets and mounds.
I watched an episode of Ace of Cakes where they had a green liquid solution that they let dry and once it had dried, they scrapped it with knife and it looked like moss and I wondered what they used, if anyone has any ideas?
I know one idea for grass would be to use coloured dessicated coconut but I don't want to do that in case any of the children have a nut allergy.

Any advice would be gratefully received!!

Thank you.

On ace of cakes they use royal icing to make moss.

Is coconut really a nut becase I grew up thinking that it is a seed?

Anyways, here is a moss looking tree I made http://cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopic-604431-225.html (page 16)

Also, the tree in my last cake can also pass as a moss looking thing.
