I am struggling when I try and create red icing. I was making a cake using butter cream and it turned out pink. Does anyone have any suggestions. The last suggestions I tried was red red + black. I got hot pink. Help!!!

It may be your brand of food coloring. I use Super Red gel color by Americolor. You will get a deep, rich red, that gets redder once it's set, and it is completely tasteless so all you taste is your icing.

Yep, that's what I use. Americolor Super Red, works great, BC, MMF, Gumpaste, always get a great red color.

Me too - Americolor Super Red. I finally found it after the same problems you were having - hot pink instead of red. It does work.

I like the powdered coloring. Did my Elmo cake in it...worked beautifully!

I use Wilton No Taste Red dye. Depending on your red you may need the whole jar but because it is No Taste the flavor of your butter cream will not be changed. I also find letting the icing sit will allow the dye to deepen in colour.

My local cake store doesn't sell Americolor that is why I use the powder in a pinch. I have ordered Americolor just not in red but I love the other colors.
