Do you just melt down semisweet with some shortening and dip?

I want a nice smooth finish. Think melt down chips and shortening and with a bit extra shortening added in - pour over?

I still need them to harden enough to pick up.

Should I use candy melts?

Thanks!

Adding shortening might make a smoother coating, but its not going to dry hard
