I've been asked to make a lemon cake with chocolate frosting for next week. Anyone know of any particular recipes that sound good together. I think this sounds terrible - but if anyone would know - it's all of you!

Thanks in advance!

Agreed, sounds terrible to me. Makes me think of that Bill Cosby routine where he gives chocolate cake and grapefruit juice to his kids for breakfast. I know, you are asking about lemon not grapefruit, but still sour. Only citrus that works with chocolate for me is orange.

Can you tactfully steer the clent away from that horrid combination? I'll eat chocolate with almost anything...but not lemon.

I, for one, love the flavour combination of chocolate and lemon. In gelati it's all I ever have.
I also really like a simple lemon icing on a simple chocolate cake so I don't see why the opposite, choc on lemon, wouldn't work too. There's so much sweetness in cake and icing/frosting that the sourness of the lemon is counter-balanced nicely.
Enjoy making/tasting something new!! icon_biggrin.gif

I've tried it in the past with great success.I stumbled upon it by sheer accident when the lemon curd floped and I had to fill the cake with a chocolate ganache. May be not for everyone but the cake I made with this combination was a huge hit.

Oh I agree I think it sounds Ewwww... But there again I have never tried it. I think Lemon and white chocolate go well together though.

I've never considered this combo either until I did a tasting with a couple and her parents in August. I was taking them through the samples - 1 by 1 - and offering either my chocolate bc or wedding bc to taste with each flavor cake. When the FOB tasted the lemon cake he immediately loved it and said in his next breath - I wonder how good it would be with the chocolate bc? --- We all looked at each other and then they were looking at me for an answer - I told them to try it and see - they all did and they all loved it. The 4 tier wedding cake they ordered will be 2 tiers of lemon cake and 2 tiers of amaretto cake with chocolate b/c in between all the layers (torte) and iced in the wedding bc.

And honestly - I never tried the combination. But I might have to just to see what it does taste like. To each their own - and as long as their check is good . . . . . .

LOL!

I get a really good box of chocolates each year at Christmas. There are three really yummy ones that are always in there; lemon cream center with dark chocolate outside, orange cream center with dark chocolate outside and keylime cream center with dark chocolate outside. I love them all! icon_biggrin.gif

She actually said to me "I know it sounds yukky - but that's what he likes" - it's for their father. Suzycakes - is your lemon cake a really "lemony" lemon - or more of a vanilla cake with lemon hints? Just wondering since your clients seemed to like it. I agree that probably a dark chocolate would be better. I'll make my dark chocolate buttercream - just trying to decide on the lemon cake. I'm thinking a milder lemon flavor would be nice. Maybe WASC with lemon pudding and some juice and zest? Any thoughts.

madgeowens Posted 16 Sep 2009 , 5:22am

cannot imagine that tasting good at all.....but thats what makes the world go round...viva la differance!

Suzycakes Posted 16 Sep 2009 , 5:48am

Hey Leckie - I use the recipe for lemon cake called Promises Better than scratch lemon cake from here on CC. I use DH lemon supreme cake mix; and for the lemonade I use frozen lemonade concentrate - but I also don't add all the water called for on the box so that it has a real lemony taste. So yes - my lemon cake is a very lemony flavored cake! The chocolate buttercream recipe I use is from here too - Chocolate Buttercream (crusting) - it starts with 22 TBSP butter and 8 oz melted unsweetened chocolate..... I'm sure you can find it. It is not a dark chocolate - but it is a rich tasting buttercream.

I think it could be great with dark chocolate. Ethel M chocolates used to make a lemon creme candy that was dipped in dark chocolate, it was divine! Unfortunately the company has been sold and their candies are just not what they used to be...

I think milk choc. would be strange. Something about a really tart lemon flavor works with the bitter dark chocolate. yum.

chocolate cake with lemon filling and choco bc is my son's favorite cake ever!! I also thought it sounds horrible when he first mentioned this was what he wanted, but actually they work very well together

Lemon cake w/chocolate icing................has turned into a very requested cake!! While it is very requested.....I've made it and never tasted it. BUT they say its delicious. It is a real lemony cake with chocolate buttercream.

I probably should try it myself next time. LOL

LeckieAnne Posted 17 Sep 2009 , 2:50am

I'll give it a try! I'll report back after and let you know what they thought. (I think I'll bake a cupcake to try myself, too!). Thanks all!
