I did a simple syrup using almond extract but I want to try today using an alcohol but the liquor store is closed on sudnay's. I do have vodka, so my question is can I use vodka or does it have to be a certain alcohol?

The point of adding liqour to a syrup it to give it flavor. Vodka doesn't have a flavor. You would add something like, Ameretto for almond, grand marnier for orange, chambord for raspberry, etc., etc.
