Candy Melts ... How Do I Make Them Smooth?

I am trying to make butterflys - using candy melts. I have a template and am tracing - which is fine, untill I go to fill in with the orange candy melts and it isn't smooth. I am new to usig chocolate - I normally just use buttercream and/or royal icing - but wanted to try something new.

I did try adding some shortening to the chocolate which helped - but now it won't harden.

Any ideas? If not, guess it is back to the royal icing!

You may have to put in the frig to help with hardening. Candy melts are not tempered like choc so placing in frig won't hurt anything. If that doesn't work out than possibly the melts are being heated up a little too much or are they outdated. Just a few things I have encountered that were problems. hth icon_smile.gif

I did some chocolate monarch butterflies on cuppies (in my pics) I'm pretty sure that I used the bottom side ,flipped them over and that side is nice and smooth...make sense?....HTH
