yes and no.
yes as can make tracing an image easier especially on "normal" size cakes
no as...
for really large cakes have to do image in parts and shift cake around and get it all to line up.
your hand blocks the image sometimes
has limits to the amount it can magnify or reduce
the lens can work loose and shift focus
lots of nooks and crannies to clean.

buy it used if at all possible -- craigslist, store/bakery closeout, etc.
I have one and I use it all the time for images on cakes.I can't freehand for the life of me...Doug is right on most things but I still like mine!!
Excellent..You just have to find a clear enough image and print it off fairly small.I usually print my images off on a 4x6 sized card.If I have to do it on a larger 11x15 or 12x18 cake then I make it larger.
The lense inverts so you can use it really small or larger...You just have to adjust it up or down to focus. It really has been one of my best investments...but then again I do alot of kids cakes!!!
Thanks all, I think I'll invest in getting one. Doug will take your advice and look for one used.
love, love, love mine. i use it for drawings, writing, have used it for cookies, used it when making detailed fondant plaques. There are 2 kinds, the 300xk has one bulb and the 1000k has 2 bulbs making it brighter. Get the 1000k if you can.
