I have made the WASC cake by Rebecca Sutterby and absolutely love it! However by the time I add in all the ingredients it gets pretty costly to make. I am currently planning on making a cake for my son and want to do a 2 layer 12x18 with a smaller side cake.

I added up the cost of ingredients and it will end up costing me 25.00 just for the cake. That's not even including the ingredients for the buttercream & fondant. So when I am done I will probably have about 50.00 or more into this cake.

So, does anyone have any recipes or ideas that will give me a comparable tasting cake to the WASC that doesn't require all the ingredients? I know I can just make a boxed cake but I do not like them since I have gotten used to the WASC recipe.

Perhaps a different shopping venue would give you more value for your $. Also, buying in larger quantities offers substantial savings.

DH cake mix - $.88 each
5# C&H granulated sugar - $2.54

Sam's Club:
5# sour cream - $4.97
36 large eggs - $3.68
25# AP flour - $6.39

Grand total $21.10

You will require 28 cups of batter, so you need to make the WASC recipe twice.
4 x .88 = $3.52
2# sugar - $1.02
2# sour cream - $1.99
12 eggs - $1.22
1# flour - $0.26

Cost of 12x18x4 cake - $8.01 Plus you have supplies left over for more cakes!

Didn't add cost of oil, because you can easily omit it (Kakeladi's Orignal WASC recipe).

Wow. I need to move to the US.

I got the Cake Boss program last night, so spent some time pricing ingredients at my local grocery store today.

The Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada WASC cake:

DH cake mix $1.97 ea
4 kg sugar $5.69
500 g sour cream $3.69
12 eggs $2.69
5 kg flour $6.99 (on sale!! icon_smile.gif )

2 x 1.97 = $3.94
2# sugar = $1.40
2# sour cream = $7.38
12 eggs = $2.69
1# flour = .70

Cost of 12 x 8 x 4 cake here in the middle of nowhere: $16.11 icon_sad.gif

Yes, having access to bulk ingredients is very helpful. icon_smile.gif

Do you have access to a Bulk Barn?

We just got a Bulk Barn and it's heaven!

Cheaper than Michael's for Gum-Tex and paste colours and handy for pretzel log "tree trunks" and chocolate pebbles and found every extract under the sun, but never thought of the basics, like sugar, flour and PS! Doh!!
