I'm attempting to make a cupcake tower and would like to use a pretty paper to cover the stand. I'll probably need to coat it in a lacquer of some sort, to keep the oils from the cupcakes from seeping into the paper.

Does anyone know if this lacquer would need to be food safe? And any ideas on what exactly I could use?? Thanks!

I am not a professional, but assuming that the cupcakes are in wrappers I wouldnt think it would matter what you used underneath them. You cold also try using contact paper.HTH!

If you're going to put the cupcakes directly on it without wrappers, then yes, you will need a food-safe covering. If you're using wrappers, then I would suggest, as tenleysmommy did, clear contact paper. It's easy enough to remove when you want to change it, though you could use some other type of covering if you wanted.
