I want to try carving a cake. Need a recipe and advice on how to bake a cake to use for carving into something. Do you bake a sheet and then stack and then carve? Bake rounds if the final shape is close to that shape? I have books I know I can use but I want a cake that also tastes good without trying a bunch of recipes that I am unfamiliar with.
I carve many of my cakes (take a look at my pics), and always use the WASC recipe as a base. It's easy to find under recipes (both an original version for a small recipe and with whole eggs and no oil, and an extended double recipe with egg whites and oil, etc ... any version is excellent!), it's heavy and dense enough that you can carve easily, but it's still delicious and moist. Try baking, cooling and chilling slightly. Then fill and stack however you want, and chill again to carve. Chilled cake is wonderful for carving! Crumbcoat once that's done. HTH!
