Keeping Fondant Pliable?

I made a large American flag out of fodant with the intention of draping it over a cake. I worked quickly, kept it covered when I wasn't working directly on it, etc... But when I lifted it up and draped it over the cake I still got creases where it bends. Any tips?

Rub it down with a little shortening before covering with plastic wrap
