Do I need to use a dowel rod in the middle of the cake?

Cake board, I am making a 9 inch top layer, Does Michael's sell 9 inch cake boards and do I need to cover it with anything before I stick it on to the bottom cake?

Hi Mishlove -
I cut a 10" a tad bit smaller than a 9" (so the board wont show) and I don't cover it (some might)
on my two decker cakes, I don't use a dowel - but I do use the plastic tubes for support in the first cake for the the second cake to sit on.
