Hello all,

I was wondering how some of you ship your cakes, like what is involved (packing, and ensuring the quality of the cake being shipped). Any and all help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Very few people ship cakes, especially decorated cakes.
The results are mixed, but generally about 90% get severely damaged in the shipping process.
None of the traditional shippers will pay out an insurance claim on a damaged cake, even if you pay extra for it.
Shipping next day is extremely expensive, given the risk involved.

Some of the high end decorators (Colette Peters and a few others) ship using white glove service at airports with curb to curb delivery. I think Continental Airlines is one of the few airlines offering this service ($$$$$$$$$).

For simple cakes, I places like Williams-Sonoma send frozen cakes overnight with dry ice in the box and custom shaped styrofoam coolers for the cake. These are one tier, basic decorated cakes. They, of course, can offer immediate replacements should there be a disaster because they are charging primo prices and have many frozen cakes on hand.

Here are a few other commercial examples:

I have shipped many cakes by bus. As long as it isn't to fragile it tavels great. I do wrap some of the decorations seperately and the receiver just attaches them later. HTH's

Thank you for your responses. I am only considering this because it was a special request from a family member.

Thank you
Chef Betty
