I am making a cake for my niece, she wants a big 3 tier cake...16, 12, and 8 inches. She wants the bottom cake to be a racing tire, the middle layer to have something to do with dirt track car racing, and the top to have a 4 wheeler like hers sort of racing through mud. OK, tire I am sure of, but how could I make the middle, the 12 inch round look like a race track. And ant ideas for the top? She was thinking just the 4 wheeler sort of stuck in some mud. And will this cake look ok with the different tiers...can you really see what each tier will look like?
Well...let me start by saying that I'm far from an expert...I do cakes from creativity, not schooling...since I have no formal training.
I can see this cake in my mind...it seems to be a really good plan to me, I like the design idea.
As you said, you have the bottom layer under control. I would do the top, with a brown fondant/MMF, or buttercreme...whatever your planning on using, and just make it very bumpy and make sure to add some ruts.
For the middle, I'd do a green grassy area. Then do a small oval track in the center of the tier and possibly find some type of grandstands to put on the outside. Then all you need are some small quads or whatnot racing on the track.
Thats my 2c...not sure how much its worth
For the second tier I'd have the racetrack flag stripes (sorry don't know what their called but I'm thinking of the black and white checkered design) on the side with the race track on the 2" edges that go around the bottom of the 8".
What I would think would be an even better idea though is to have a race track going up the sides of your cake with the 4 wheeler on top at the finish line.
This kind of idea for the sides of the cake (racetrack winding around)
You could always make the cake board to look like a tier or do the base tier as a tire and the other two as the racetrack.
Hope that makes sense.
thanks for the ideas
