I've seen numerous whimsical cakes with wired decorations. What kind of wire is safe to insert in to the cake? Do i have to wrap it in anything to protect it??

A lot of people use floral wire and then insert a straw in the cake and the wire into the stra (think coffe stirrers since they are so small)

I don't like floral wire because it isn't food safe.

I purchase Stainless Steel wire (stainless steel is food safe) then boil it to sterilize it. Then cut, bend, and insert as needed. I purchase what is called TIG wire (used for welding stainless steel) but you can also find stainless steel wire in the beading department of wal-mart or other craft stores.

I never insert wire into the cake. Always use a posy pick/ flower pick! icon_smile.gif

What gauge (size) of wire do you use?

I use wire that is 1/16 thick. Off the top of my head i don't remember what gauge wire that is. The TIG wire I use is in inches thick.
