I've been doing this for a while; but I thought I'd take a picture and share the idea. I call it a "crown" cake because I am using the crowns of cakes to make it. So, this is the crown I trimmed off a 12" round cake. I have two crowns because I made a layer cake. I just put bc in between the crowns and serve. It's easy, not wasteful, and my family likes that they can just pick them up and eat without a fork and plate.
I know you could put any filling in the middle. Hope you try this idea.

(It looks like I'm having a "pixel" issue with my photo. I'll try posting it another way.)

Also works well if you happen to have no where to put the ganache that drips off the cake. icon_biggrin.gif Just add the butter cream between and spread the ganache over the crown. YUMMY!!!

Oh what a good idea!! You could even cut some circles out of it, wrap and freeze for a quick single serve snack. I always munch on cake scraps while I'm working icon_redface.gif but this will be something much better to do! Thanks icon_biggrin.gif

I make these for my guys all the time. They call them whoopie pies and even if I don't make them, they will gather the icing and make them themselves. Sometimes, I fill them, cut them into pieces, either wrap them if plastic wrap or put them in an airtight container, and throw them in the freezer. This way the kids can grab and go, and I don't waste too much either. icon_biggrin.gif

I did a smaller version of this when my cupcakes spilleth over onto the pan. They didn't rise up and make a dome, they just got to the top and spread horizontally. I scraped icing with crumbs into it between 2 of them and then stacked them together to make more room on my counter. My hubby loved them!

I do this with crowns all the time. It keeps my "boys" (DH and DS) from mutinying because I bake cakes for other people, and they don't always get a piece.

Chocolate cake with peanut butter spread between layers is quite yummy, and if you happen to have some banana slices to throw in, it's a party!

Thanks, I hated to throw the crowns away. I have just been putting them in the cake server and letting everybody pick on them, not anymore!

Actual peanut butter? That's interesting sounding!

It's quite good. (I don't like buttercream, so I had to get more creative.)

Besides, doesn't the nutritious peanut butter turn it into a meal? Just think PB & Banana filled chocolate dome cake for breakfast...is it really any worse than donuts?

A bakery near here does that.. they sell them as 'Cakewiches'

They're very popular!

I just thought maybe it would be yummy with marshmallow creme inside instead of buttercream, making it like a marshmallow pie. Then I started thinking about it later (my sweet tooth was kicking in) you could make it fancy for your family and use a biscuit cutter to cut out circles and cover with ganache or just melted chocolate. To make it extra special a sprinkle of powdered sugar with a heart stencil, my girls always love that!

One crown cake turned into a fancy affair!

My kids don't call them crowns..they are 'cake fillets' icon_biggrin.gif
And I've had my dd (1icon_cool.gif pout because I filleted the cake while she wasn't home so she didn't get any. icon_rolleyes.gif

And one more thing-'throw them away'!!! Blasphemy!! icon_wink.gif

i dothis too, except i use just one of the crowns, slap on some icing fold in half and call it a cake taco! trouble is, they're very easy to eat and before you know it you've had more then your fair share!
