I'm attempting my first 'purse' shaped cake this week but I need some help...I planned to frost in buttercream and have fondant "leather-like" accents (ie corners/handles), but I wanted to pre-pipe in royal icing the letters (for a Luis Vitton purse), I was hoping after the letters harden I could apply them to the cake?...Can I do this? put royal icing details (after they harden) onto a buttercream layer?...Help! LOL Beth

Here is a topic i started about an RI piece on buttercream that might answer your question:

I gave the cake to my uncle 1 hour after putting the RI piece on top of the buttercream cake and nothing happened, it didn't go soggy and neither did the colour bleed but i didn't know if it stayed that way or not for the rest of the day but it looked like it would have stayed fine to me icon_smile.gif

The only thing I could see happening is the royal icing cracking if there is any movement of the surface of the butter cream.
