I am trying to find out what to use if I want to paint on a fondant/royal icing cake? I already use airbrush and dust, but I have seen on the cake challenges on tv, that they use paint on cakes. Can anyone help?
Thanks
just mix dusts with a clear alcohol based liquid, such as vodka or clear vanilla. You have paint.
Or, since you said you have airbrushed, you probably have airbrush colors on hand. Use those. You can use them straight out of the bottle. If you do go the alcohol/gel color route, use everclear or golden grain, they have a higher alcohol content than vodka. The higher the alcohol content the less it damages the fondant.
Some people use lemon extract or lemon juice. I don't know about the vanilla, never tried that. I normally use vodka.

Thanks I didnt know you can use lemon juice, ill prob give that a go, esp if its a childs cake, putting vodka on it is worrying my lol
I found when I used clear vanilla the alcohol evaporated too quickly and it dried out. I had to keep using more. Annoying it was. I'm going to try the lemon juice next time too.
You do not have to worry about using vodka on children's cakes. The alcohol evaporates. Extracts actually have a higher alcohol content than vodka, they evaporate quicker(so you have to use more) and it's much more expensive. I can get a large bottle of Absolut for $27 that lasts me for months- a little thing of extract barely lasts one cake.
I have found that my "paint" is streaking. Am I making it with too much alcohol? I want to paint with copper lustre dust, any suggestions?
