whats the best to decorate cookies? fondant (sugarpaste) or royal icing?

im going to make a few jungle and car cookies today and was thinking of using fondant (sugarpaste) because it seems quicker than icing them with royal icing. Does it taste ok? Or make the cookies go soft?

I've put marshmallow fondant on cookies. It's a lot faster and it hardens to the point where you can bag or stack the cookies pretty quickly. If you cut out the fondant shapes and put them on the cookies right when they come out of the oven, then you don't need to use anything to glue the fondant on. The heat of the cookie melts the fondant just enough to stick it to the cookie.
