I'm going to make a 3D cherry cake for a friend's birthday on Friday. I don't need many servings, so I'd like to keep it small. The problem is that I don't have the sports ball pan or any oven-safe bowls. So I'm going to try to carve my first cake. Do you think two 8 inches sandwiched between two 6 inches would carve down to a good sphere? Also, using boxed mix, how many mixes would I need?

Thanks for any help!

That sounds like it would work. I have heard of people using 8", 7", and 6". I think you will need 2 boxes. HTH
