Best Way To Do This Cake?

Ok I have had a customer email me this picture and I am curious about how you would do it.

I know that it would be carved what I am wondering if how you would do the ledge?
Any tips would be great!!

id carve the bottom out of a rectangle, do the top out of loaf tins (or carve if need be). that way = instant ledge. now as to fondanting that ledge... mmm!

ya i think it will be able to do the boat part of it...the ledge is my only concern....i might have to try a few things.

To make the ledge, I would simply place fondant sqs a bit higher than the cake edge.

There are directions for it in a Lindy Smith book. The way she makes the raised strip is that she uses fondant mixed with gum trag (I guess we'd use tylose) and rolls a strip, then glues one edge onto the oval cake, all the way around.

oooo ok! ya i think it you mixed fondant and gumpaste you could get it to harden a bit and then put them around the cake edge. Thanks so much!!
