Baseball Cupcakes...your Expertise/opinions Wanted!

Ok, I've carefully searched for posts related to this topic and can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Hopefully the Cupcake PhD's can help!
I'm making 60 cupcakes this weekend to take to a potluck. Thought I would do a baseball theme since we're getting together with families from the baseball team.
I'm planning to do 1/2 vanilla, 1/2 chocolate cupcakes with the tops looking like a baseball.
My questions are:
Domed cupcake or flat cupcake?
Fondant or BC for the base? (I'm partial to fondant)
Royal icing or ?? for the stitches?
I'm not planning to fill these cupcakes since most of them will be eaten by kids who won't care anyway. And, the fact that I'm not getting paid makes that decision a lot easier too.
If anyone has any other decorating ideas for the top, I would love to hear those too. Thanks in advance everyone!
I made baseball themed cupcakes last year for my son's tee ball team. I made royal icing gloves with a baseball and royal icing plates with a RI bat. I also did cardinals since that was his team.
I love making the royal icing toppers because I can do it in advance, and then when it comes time to ice the cupcakes, I just do a simple swirl.
Here's a picture. I hope it helps!

I ended up using fondant as the final topper for the cupcakes. Me + smoothing BC do not mix! I think they turned out great!
