Cream Cheese Icing

I have a question I've dying to ask...Why do most cream cheese icing recipes have shortening in them? Does it make it more stable?

One of the reasons I was asking is I use a cream cheese icing on all my cakes and some days I just can't get a perfect smooth look. I don't know if it's my skill level or the icing.
